Frequently asked questions regarding
residential fence installation
Q. Should I notify my neighbors
about the fence replacement?
A. Yes. Your neighbors will need to
make arrangements regarding their
pets and may wish to secure their
back yard. They may also wish to
remove items from their side of the
fence, as items attached to the
fence may be unknowingly damaged or
disposed of during removal.
Q. Can DalTex fence do anything
to stop our dog from digging
underneath the fence?
A. We don’t recommend installing
fence pickets directly into dirt
since this invites rot and insect
infestation. Generally, most fences
are installed an inch or two above
grade. On any fence installed
without a concrete footer, we
recommend using 2x6 treated
kick-boards, to prevent pets from
digging into the exposed area. (A
treated kick-board can be placed in
direct contact with the soil without
threat of rot or insect
infestation.) If you have a
persistent dog with a habit of
digging, you may consider a concrete
footer.
Q. Will Daltex Fence remove items
attached to my fence such as
lattice, equipment boxes, rain
gauges, potted plants, etc.?
A. We ask you to remove your
valuables from the fence and work
site, so the items aren’t
unknowingly damaged or disposed
during the fence removal process.
Q. Does the crew trim tree limbs
or bushes in the way of the fence?
A. We ask you to handle all required
trimming prior to fence
installation. Although Daltex crews
are experts in custom fence
installation, our crews have limited
knowledge of proper trimming &
pruning practices. Any additional
trimming that must be performed by
the Daltex crew may be subject to an
additional charge.
Q. Does Daltex Fence locate
property pins and install the fence
on the property line?
A. No. We put the fence back where
it was originally located unless you
tell us otherwise. If you have
concerns about the property line, we
recommend you establish the correct
location of the property lines
before installation of the fence or
your fence. This can easily arranged
by contracting a local survey
company to locate and clearly mark
the pins.
Q. Should we be concerned with
deeds and codes relating to our
fence or gate?
A. Yes. You will need to read the
deed restrictions relating to your
fence. HOA deeds and local building
codes can restrict fence heights,
easements, stain color preferences,
and even material types. Our
experienced fence consultants are
familiar with most local codes and
will be happy to share their
knowledge. However, deeds within HOA
associations can vary greatly, and
it is your responsibility to read
and comply with established
requirements.
Q. Will Daltex fence locate
underground utilities?
A. Daltex Fence will call Dig Tess
prior to the excavation. Please
visit their site at
http://www.digtess.org for more
information.
Q. What is the scheduling
process?
A. Our fence consultants will work
with you and your family to
coordinate scheduling options. The
start date could vary from one to
three weeks, depending upon the size
of the project, material
availability, current work load and
weather.
Q. Does your crew dig out the old
posts and footings?
A. Typically all corner, gate and
terminal posts will be dug up and
reset in exactly the same spot. Line
posts are usually cut below the
grade and the new posts are
re-spaced. This is standard practice
and within AFA industry guidelines,
but if desired, line posts can be
completely dug out for an additional
charge. Please discuss this option
with your Daltex fence consultant.
Q. Will my new fence come with a
written guaranty?
A. Yes. You will receive a written
guaranty covering all defects in
workmanship for a period of 1 to 10
years, depending on the type of
fence and products installed. (Storm
and wind damage are excluded from
this warranty.)
Q. Should we consider pressure
treated lumber for our wood fence or
gate?
A. Pressure treated 2x4 rails and
2x6 kick-boards, are ideal for the
framework. However, in hot, humid
environments like ours, pressure
treated “fence pickets” tend to warp
and/or cup. Consequently, we use
pressure treated 2x4 rails on all
fences, and pressure treated 2x6
kick-boards when indicated. But
since Daltex is committed to
building a durable, long-lasting
fence, we do not install pressure
treated pickets.
Q. Is it normal to have color
variances between cedar pickets?
A. Yes. Since cedar is a natural
wood product, it will normally vary
in color and hue. But if you prefer
a more consistent color, ask your
fence consultant about stain
options.
Q. What is the difference between
Spruce and Western Red Cedar?
A. Spruce is an economical choice
that will provide good mid-grade
durability. Spruce is white in
appearance when first installed, and
left untreated will weather to a
silvery gray. It will readily accept
stain or paint. It is more prone to
shrink, warp, check and cup, than is
Western Red Cedar.
Western Red Cedar has unique
characteristics that make it
dimensionally stable. It lays flat,
stays straight, and holds fastenings
tightly, which translates into
longer life for your fence. Cedar
also contains natural preservatives
that resist moisture, decay and
insect damage.
